Saul Bass Style Movie Intro

The goal of this project was to create a fictional movie opening sequence in the style of Saul Bass who pioneered the use of motion graphics. He had a unique almost geometrical style to his work, though it lacked detail it made up for it with it’s unique color palette that defined most of his work.

Programs Used:

- Asset Creation

- Longform 2D Animation

- Character Animation

The first step was to begin brainstorming what the movie I would be making an opening sequence would be. At the time I was working on this project I had just finished a student film project and I thought it would be perfect to create this intro for that movie. The plot followed the main character going to a job interview and being seated waiting for the interview to start. The only problem is the interview never started because there was no interview, leading to the main character keeping themselves occupied while waiting for an interview that doesn’t actually exist. That’s as much of the plot as I’ll reveal for now but the animation reveals more of it through it’s visuals.

The next step was asset creation, it involved a lot of character silhouettes (as that matched Saul Bass’ style) as well as backgrounds and additional objects for the characters to interact with. Once all assets had been created it was time to animate the entire sequence, closely following my storyboards I began animating all characters and objects to match what had been laid out in the storyboards.

One crucial aspect about this was to try to match Saul Bass’ style as accurately as possible while still adding my own spin on it to “modernize” his style. The end result was a style that was clearly Saul Bass inspired but also includes modern effects to introduce it to the current age. After revisiting the project later on and repolishing some of the transitions and effects it earns it’s place as one of my favorite projects to have worked on.
